Tokyo Canal City - Shibaura Canal

This episode we enter the Shibaura Canal from Tokyo Bay. Historically this area was under the sea and was famous for the many varieties of sea life caught here. The Japanese name for prawns, shibaebi (shiba shrimp) likely gets its name here. However in 1912, the mouth of the Sumida River was dredged to improve navigation and the resulting sediment was dumped in this area. During the late 1980s, the cheap land made it attractive to development and many fashionable discos and live music clubs were built. More recently on Shibaura Island, the site of a former factory zone, high-rise condominiums continue to be developed.

トウキョウ・カナル・シティ - 芝浦運河

今回は、東京湾から芝浦運河に入ります。江戸時代までは芝浦は漁業で栄え、芝浦で獲れた魚は活きが良くて人気だった。芝海老の名前は芝で獲った海老から由来した説もあれば、芝海老は元々「しらえび」（白蝦）と呼ばれ、変化して「しばえび」となり、芝海老から地名が由来するせつもある。芝浦では海苔の養殖も行われた。しかし1912年、隅田川の改良工事が行われ、芝浦は浚渫された土砂で埋られた。バブル期では安価な土地が開発に魅力的だったため、多くのディスコやライブハウスが流行った。最近では、工場地帯の跡地だった芝浦アイランドで高層マンションの開発が続いている。
